We are eye care professionals. We are the caretakers of the ocular surface and the guardians of vision.
All those in favor of preservative freedom, say eye
Today, we choose to preserve the health of the ocular surface over extraneous preservatives, where possible
Every day we aim to sustain our patients’ view of this world, prescribing eye drops and exploring other therapeutics and interventions. Our recommendations are unique to each patient, addressing their current condition or long-term disease while managing expectations of the best possible outcomes.
Many prescription and OTC eye drop formulations continue to include preservatives. Prolonged use of preservative formulations have proven deleterious to the ocular surface and some anatomical structures of the eye. Some of these effects occur immediately with acute signs and symptoms, and some progress slowly over chronic use.
Preservative Freedom is a commitment to help preserve patient eye health—now and throughout their lives. We’re pledging our commitment to breaking through our apathy, indifference, and old habits, and to do so while continuing to keep our patients' eye care as the highest priority.
Take the Pledge

The Preservative Freedom campaign is led by a Coalition of leaders in eye health and care in the United States. The founding members of the coalition include: Dry Eye University, The Glaucoma Foundation, The Intrepid Eye Society, National Medical Association Ophthalmology Section, Real World Ophthalmology, and Thea Pharma Inc. Together, the group focuses on raising awareness of unmet needs in ocular surface disease and opportunities to pursuepreservative-free topical ophthalmic medications.
